The operating system (OS) is the main software system on your computer running all the programs that you want to run.

OpenTTD currently runs in the following operating systems:

- BeOS 5, Zeta 1.1 (x86 only) [*]
- DOS [*]
- FreeBSD
- Linux (NOTE: different Linux variations and distributions behave differently, but some of them include OpenTTD in their packaging system in up-to-date version)
- MacOS X [*] (NOTE: Due to the lack of a MacOS X developer, MacOS X is no longer officially supported. The last official release was 0.7.5. However, there are many Mac ports of newer versions on the forums

- NetBSD
- OpenBSD
- OS/2
- Palm OS 5 [*]
- ReactOS (runs the Windows binary)
- RISC OS [*]
- SkyOS [*]
- Solaris

There are efforts for a unified portable device version.
[*] Currently not an official port. This version is not maintained by OpenTTD developers. Many of the non-official ports are outdated.
